Chapter 14

I didn’t get any sleep. Instead, I spent the rest of the night on the phone. Some of my former contacts hung up as soon as they heard my voice. Others were suspiciously accommodating, telling me they would be happy to help with whatever I needed, but that we really should set up a meeting to discuss it in person. They didn’t care one bit about what I had to say; I could hear it in their voices. They were too busy salivating over what kind of reward they could wring from Hades’s temple in exchange for me.

When the sun came up, and I didn’t have any numbers left to call, I fell back to my last-resort option. I went to Alex.

When he opened his bedroom door, he was still rubbing the sleep from his eyes. But his gaze sharpened quickly when he saw me. “Mal? Isn’t it a little early for you?”

“A little late, actually. Can I come in?”

“Of course. What’s up?” He frowned as he closed the door behind me. “Are those the same clothes you were wearing yesterday?”

“Like I said—late, not early. Which brings me to what I need to talk to about.”

“Why are you holding your arm funny?”

The wound had started to close up already, thanks to my quick healing, but even the power of Hades could only do so much for a gunshot wound. “I slept on it wrong.”

“It looks like more than that to me. Let me see.” He reached for my arm and started to roll up my sleeve.

I stepped back. “I’m not here to talk about me. This is about Laurie.”

“You walk in here hurt, and you expect me not to—”

“Alex, please. This is important. We need to get her away from that cult.”

The intensity in my voice must have distracted him from his worry, because he backed off. “I’m concerned about her too. But I haven’t seen anything to indicate that she’s in real danger. And as much as I tease her, I can’t deny that she’s happier now. I’m not saying we shouldn’t keep an eye on her, but we don’t need to take drastic action yet, either.”

“Drastic action is exactly what we need. That place…” I hesitated. How was I going to get him on my side without explaining that I had snuck out again? I hadn’t thought that would be an issue. From how he had talked earlier, I had thought he would jump at the chance to help me save her. “I did some digging. That place isn’t what it seems.”

“I’ve read all the articles, too. Believe me, when she first called me up to talk about that place, I read everything there was to read. Checked up on all the leaders, stalked their social media, the works. But all anyone has been able to dig up on them so far is speculation.” Alex sighed. “You probably don’t know much about what happened to her after you… died. Didn’t die. Whatever. She took it hard, and some of her coping mechanisms were… less than ideal.
