Chapter 14
I didnât get any sleep. Instead, I spent the rest of the night on the phone. Some of my former contacts hung up as soon as they heard my voice. Others were suspiciously accommodating, telling me they would be happy to help with whatever I needed, but that we really should set up a meeting to discuss it in person. They didnât care one bit about what I had to say; I could hear it in their voices. They were too busy salivating over what kind of reward they could wring from Hadesâs temple in exchange for me.
When the sun came up, and I didnât have any numbers left to call, I fell back to my last-resort option. I went to Alex.
When he opened his bedroom door, he was still rubbing the sleep from his eyes. But his gaze sharpened quickly when he saw me. âMal? Isnât it a little early for you?â
âA little late, actually. Can I come in?â
âOf course. Whatâs up?â He frowned as he closed the door behind me. âAre those the same clothes you were wearing yesterday?â
âLike I saidâlate, not early. Which brings me to what I need to talk to about.â
âWhy are you holding your arm funny?â
The wound had started to close up already, thanks to my quick healing, but even the power of Hades could only do so much for a gunshot wound. âI slept on it wrong.â
âIt looks like more than that to me. Let me see.â He reached for my arm and started to roll up my sleeve.
I stepped back. âIâm not here to talk about me. This is about Laurie.â
âYou walk in here hurt, and you expect me not toââ
âAlex, please. This is important. We need to get her away from that cult.â
The intensity in my voice must have distracted him from his worry, because he backed off. âIâm concerned about her too. But I havenât seen anything to indicate that sheâs in real danger. And as much as I tease her, I canât deny that sheâs happier now. Iâm not saying we shouldnât keep an eye on her, but we donât need to take drastic action yet, either.â
âDrastic action is exactly what we need. That placeâ¦â I hesitated. How was I going to get him on my side without explaining that I had snuck out again? I hadnât thought that would be an issue. From how he had talked earlier, I had thought he would jump at the chance to help me save her. âI did some digging. That place isnât what it seems.â
âIâve read all the articles, too. Believe me, when she first called me up to talk about that place, I read everything there was to read. Checked up on all the leaders, stalked their social media, the works. But all anyone has been able to dig up on them so far is speculation.â Alex sighed. âYou probably donât know much about what happened to her after you⦠died. Didnât die. Whatever. She took it hard, and some of her coping mechanisms were⦠less than ideal.
